Fall Weekend Tour 2005

by Sally Legge and Janice Wright

Nine Model As: Doug and Nan Linden, Wayne and Susan Champagne, John and Shirley Jacobson, Art and Pat Callan, Gene and Joyce Bunce, Mike Doyle, Tom and Lisa Zappala, Harold and Sally Legge, Bob and Jan Wright and three "moderns": Dick and Maria Berry, Steve and Patti Goldberg and Ed and Carolyn Wlodyka left Sudbury on a very rainy Friday the 14th of October headed for Center Harbor, NH.  In Hollis NH, we met up with Bruce Marshall at a coffee stop. Then we traveled the back roads of NH, where the foliage and views would have been beautiful had it not been raining,  Up to Concord, NH and our stop for lunch - still raining!  After a nice lunch we continued on to Center Harbor stopping along the way in Meredith at an Antique Shop - still raining.

Shortly after arriving at the Center Harbor Inn and while most of us enjoyed a cocktail party in the lobby, Dick and Barbara O’Brian and Gene and Barbara Tallone arrived . There were a few glitches in our dinner plans for Friday and Saturday (some NH restaurants don’t seem to know what the word reservation means) but we solved those problems and were all able to get together for dinner on both nights.

We woke up Saturday to rain yet AGAIN!  The New Hampshire Lakes Region Model A Club invited us to attend their meeting on Saturday AM at an old Gulf gas station which is owned by one of the members. It’s their unofficial club house and we had a great time talking Model As and admired the nice assortment of old cars being repaired and/or restored.  That afternoon, we were invited to tour the "garages’ of members Bart Carlson and Ladd Eaton.  Bart’s collection of cars was varied and displayed in a beautiful garage which was more like a museum.  Ladd’s garage on the other hand was an example of a working restoration shop.  He had few Model As being restored for customers. We had to admire some of the work in his paint booth...old Henry never put out axles that looked that shinny. They were very gracious hosts and put on a lovely spread of cider, cheese and crackers with apple crisp and ice cream. Some of the women went shopping in Meredith and Center Harbor.

Sunday AM we awoke to see a glimpse of the Sun (what is that?) which very quickly disappeared. At least the rain stopped. We left at 8:30AM and traveled thru Wolfeboro to the Front Porch restaurant where we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast. We headed home from there, stopping to fix a flat tire (John Jacobson) and then on Barrington, NH where we visited Calef’s Country Store and The Christmas Dove which is the largest Christmas shop in New England. They even had a Dove which Nan Linden was looking for everywhere she went.

We kept heading toward home and stopped for dinner at the Pond View Restaurant in Kingston, NH where they even roped off parking for us. They knew what the word "reservation" means. We continued on toward Massachusetts with one more stop, for what else? ICE CREAM—No tour is complete without ice cream. Yes, it was raining but that didn’t stop the group from enjoying each other’s company.

ed. note:  The cars ran pretty well considering the amount of rain we had.  Many of the As had roof leaks, Bruce Marshall's car had a carburetor float that that refused to float anymore and John Jacobson had a flat tire and his overdrive quit on the way home.
